Standing at 3,794 M in the remote Taplejung district, Pathivara Devi Temple (also known as Mukumlung by the local Limbu community) is more than just a destination; it is a profound intersection of deep-rooted faith and high-altitude majesty. For many, it is the ultimate "wish-fulfilling" pilgrimage, where the spiritual energy is as palpable as the thin, crisp mountain air.
The temple’s origin is steeped in a captivating local legend. It is said that centuries ago, local shepherds lost their entire flock of sheep while grazing on this very hill. In a vision, the Goddess appeared and instructed them to perform a ritual sacrifice. When they did, the lost sheep miraculously returned. Today, devotees still offer sacrifices and prayers, believing that Pathivara Devi—a fierce yet compassionate manifestation of the divine—grants the deepest desires of those who visit with a pure heart.
The trek to Pathivara is a sensory transition. Starting from Kafle Pati, the trail winds through dense rhododendron forests that erupt into a vibrant palette of red and pink during the spring (March–May). As you ascend, the forest thins to reveal staggering views of the Kanchenjunga massif, the world’s third-highest peak. The final climb is a series of stone steps that test your stamina but reward you with a 360-degree panorama of the eastern Himalayas, including Kumbhakarna and Makalu.
